Naming Spiritual Experiences

Is there something that's happened to you that you are anxious about telling others? Would you explain this with the words "You're going to think I'm crazy when I tell you and I don't really have the words to explain this to you but...."

Many times what has happened to you is a spiritual experience (an SE). 30-50% of the population in the United States and England have had these types of experiences. Some are: mystical experiences, near-death experiences, speaking with the dead, feeling the presence of someone who has died as being with you, seeing angels, synchroncities, which are at least two random events that happen just to you and are very meaningful, etc.

These types of experiences add meaning to your life; however, you are afraid to share them for fear of being considered "crazy." Our society does not have a place for these experiences. I am hoping that this blog will help to create a consensus that these SEs are happening to many more people than 30-50% of the population.

What do you think?

Dear Karen,
It is interesting to read your post. I beleive that many people experience things outside their understanding and are afraid to share such experiences with others. If I may I would like to share with you and others what responses I received when I shared my SE with others.
I will attempt to keep things brief, but no promises...I did not grow up in a religous home but always knew within me there was and is a God. Later in life to fulfill this longing of wanting to understand the supernatural or mysteries of God I embraced Christianity. Now here is where the rub of SE comes in reference to organized religion. I have always had the ability to read people. It was something in my family both my mom and grandmom could do the same thing. By reading people I mean an intuitive ablility to see to the truth of a person. Very often this ability has helped others to avoid harm. I did not see it as evil. The response of Christians to this ability was "you are just looking for the negative in others". Well I was a little taken back by this response. What happened intutively from God was me doing something bad. This was confusing to me but I kept on participating in Christianity. I would have other experiences such as walking into some type of portal or black hole thing while at work. Not an experience I was seeking after, it just happened. The same with poltergiest activity, it just happened. Reponses from the religous people in my life were shocking to me. I would hear comments like the devil wants you in his camp. I even had a reverand tell me I was earmarked by the devil. In pursuing a sense of finding balance I become involved in a charasmatic church that believed in the gift of the spirit thinking I would be more accepted there, I was wrong. Again even after taking their training and doing what was considered appropraite to participate in their meetings I was still seen as evil. Believe me when I say I did nothing to promote this response. I don't know if anyone else has ever experienced these types of reactions but very often it seems as though people know I can see to the core of who they are and don't want me around because of it. I do not gossip and only when I feel that someone is in danger do I attempt to gently inject a suggestion being careful around certain people.
Well, these are some of the experiences I have had. I refused to except their veiws of what was happening. I am not evil and never have been. I accept this gifting is from God and to try and ignore it because of others fears just felt wrong to me.It has never caused anyone harm, it has always helped and that is my conclusion of the matter. I still seek God and still have experiences but there are only certian people within my sphere that I share them with. These people have seen and experienced the truth in what I experience. Unexplained things happen, rather others want to believe them or not doesn't mean they are any less real to those who have been touched by SE. If you have these kinds of experiences I hope you have better responses to them than I had. I think receiving reponses such as these is what makes people fear the idea of sharing. Be encouraged! There are people out there who will believe you and will not call you evil or weird because of them.
Thanks for listening...

I have encountered the same reaction to my Spiritual Ability! Some one told me that because I could sense and feel things from not only people that are living, but also from people who had passed, that this was evil. That is nonsense! I have been following the Lord since I was a child. I enjoy helping people and also teach first grade religon. I could write stories and take up the whole page, but I will make it brief. I dream of people when they are in distress. When this happens, I try to help that person in any way I can. Sometimes people come to me in my dreams or visions, and I have never seen them before. I do tell these people to go to God and ask him for help. It took me a long time to understand that I was givin this ability to help people and to spread the word of the Lord. Now tell me, does this sound like evil to you? I have found that when people do not understand something, or maybe never experienced what you have, that are quick to judge you for it. Just keep your faith in God and ask him to always direct your steps. I hope this has helped in some way.
